What is Kaitiakitanga?
Guardianship.
Protecting something important to you.

By making water fountain for the birds on the island because there is no fresh water. Making more penguin box for the penguins so they can have a safe and warm home.

What is Sustainability?
Something that is renewable, you can replace it when you use it.
Planting native trees on Quail Island.

What is Rahui Tapu?
Something that is sacred, It is something that is restricted.
How do we show Rahui Tapu on Quail Island?
If the penguins get scared because of the people on the island, giving them a restricted area so they won't be scared.

Leprosy Writing

A Day In A Life Of A Leper

Hello, my name is Will Vallane and in 1907 I was forced to leave and go to Quail Island because I have Leprosy. I was diagnosed in 1907, the same year I moved into a small house by myself after living in a giant hospital by myself, which I hated. When I woke up in the morning I wait for Mr Thomas to come and bring my breakfast because I’m not able to make my own. There was a fence surrounding my little house to stop having physical contact with anyone because the disease is contagious. Everyday around lunch time I would always listen to music on my record player. Mr Thomas, the caretaker had to turn it on because I was unable to do it myself. I also enjoy reading illustration books  although I was losing my eyesight, I still enjoyed looking at the pretty colors. Around 6:30 I rang my friends and family on the telephone to see how they were doing. After that, Mr Thomas dropped off my dinner, cooked chicken and carrots. He also chopped some wood and put the fire on, so I wouldn’t get cold at night. At about 7 o’clock I went out onto the deck to watch the sunset go down. At 8:30, after the sunset went down, I walked back inside and got into bed.

Nature & Sustainability

Nature & Sustainability

I think that humans need to be a lot more respectful and careful with nature because after all we live of nature and without it we would die, and after watching those videos I seen a lot of disgusting things in the ocean. We need to learn about picking up our rubbish and not littering. Plastic bags kill all of out animals and soon enough they'll be extincted. There are 5 different garbage patches in the world. Humans need to learn the respect nature and not do all the disgusting things, for example, Cutting down less trees, Picking up any rubbish they see out in public, And not littering. Nature has been around longer than all humans, 4.5 billion years.

How does this show my working?
This shows my learning because I've showed what i understood

Image result for empathy

L.O  Describe the changes, challenges and needs of adolescents with respect to the 4 dimensions of Hauora.
Success Criteria :
Describes the challenges associated with bullying, social media and the general media for the 21st century adolescent.

Empathy;
The ability to understand someone else's feelings as if they are your own.

You don't have to be in the same position as someone to know how they're feeling.
Empathy is looking after someone and helping them out when they need it.
It can put a smile on someones face and make them happy.
Some people hide how they feel
I think empathy is important because people don't deserve to sad and differently, no matter what they're going through. it can put a smile on someones face.

B&E Reflection 4

What am I learning
How to start a small business and selling our products. Knowing the limit of how much money we have to spend and working as a group. Making enough products so we don't run out as fast. Making a lot of posters to advertise our business.

How am I progressing in my learning
By making our products in time. Listening to everyone feedback by modifying our business and products. Helping everyone else out in our group. Making sure out product looks good so we get a higher profit. We have stuck to the budget because we have only spent $5. We have kept track of our spending choices by not spending over $20. We have stuck to our business plan by writing what we're doing everyday we have stuck to what we're making.

What did I achieve today
The making of our products. we are about half way finished with our book marks and key chains, we just need to finish some more bracelets. We have finished all our posters and our packaging.

What do you need to work on tomorrow
Making sure our product is finished. To go around the school and put up posters about out business. Making sure we have enough of our product. Getting an idea of how we're going to present our product on the day.

What has my company done so far
We've finished all the paper work for our business, finished the posters and are almost finished all our products. We have worked as a group to get all our products made. We have also shared ideas through our the group. We have started all of our products and are almost finished our bookmarks and key chains, we just need to finish our bracelets.

What my companies next steps are
Making sure we work as a group to finish our product. Setting up our market so it looks presentable and so people will come over to have a look. Telling friends/family to come buy from our business

What you expect on market day

I think that our will get a profit and I'm hoping we will do very well. I'm hoping that we will get over $10 dollars. I think we will make a profit by catching peoples eyes and all our posters around the school.

Persuasive Writing

Mrs Elley Shoes

Hornby High School
180 Waterloo Road
Hornby
Christchurch 8042

16th June 2017

Dear Mrs Elley
We should only wear black leather shoes because of all the dangers around the school, for example the rebuild, in science you could drop something heavy on your foot or if hot liquid won’t burn through as quick. At tech you could also drop something heavy on your feet.

We should also wear black leather shoes because it wouldn’t look nice or presentable wearing bright pink or bright yellow sneakers with our black and blue uniform. People could also get bullied because they don’t have highly branded shoes, and feel insecure on what people will say about their shoes.

The last reason is because of the cost. Some parents might not have enough money for the shoes that their kids want. At the start of the school year black leather shoes are cheaper and it’s easier for parents to buy them.

We should only wear black leather shoes for around school and work but wear sneakers for playing sports.

Ethos - Credible Ethical

This shows ethos because they're using people well known and famous. They use famous people to make you buy the product.

Pathos - Emotion

This shows emotion by making you feel bad for all the animals picking up and eating your rubbish. they are trying to make you pick up your rubbish and not to litter.

Logos - Logical

This shows logic because they added statistics and 'er' words. Its trying to say that their product is better than all the other hair products by using '30x strong' but stronger than what??????

Business Through Gaming

LO. Run a profitable business

The most challenging part about the games were staying alive.
What i learnt about running a business is that it's harder than it looks
I am wondering how people run businesses because in the game it was really hard.

Explanation Writing

Have you ever wondered what screwdrivers are made out of? Or why we have them?

A screwdriver is one of many machines, and possibly one of the simplest. There are three types of screwdrivers the philips head screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver and an electric screwdriver. A screwdriver has three main parts, the handle, the shaft and the tip. The shaft is a long tough steel pole on the end of the handle, the handle makes it easier to hold and to use and the tip is basically what makes a screwdriver work. The tip inserts into the screw head to turn it. Handles are usually made out of wood, metals or plastic and are hexagonal, square, or ovals to stop them from rolling when they are set down.

In 1908 Robertson Screw invented the screwdriver and in the early 1930s Henry Frank Phillips invented the phillips head screw / screwdriver. The earliest documented screwdrivers were used in Europe in the late Middle Ages. They were probably invented in the late 15th century, either in Germany or France.

A screwdriver is pretty easy to use. Start with the screw, place the screw on the tip and hold it there with two fingers. Apply light pressure while turning it in a clockwise direction until the screw is through the wood.

Screwdrivers make our lives easier because they take hardly anytime to use and can repair basically anything. They can repair broken sunglasses, hinges on a door and lots more. They’re also quite small and don’t take up much space.

High Impact Car Race Results

First we modified our cars to make sure they didn't roll over, we all had the same material so it was fair. There were three races, Fastest, Stopping and then Distance. We had 5 minutes at the start to adjust our cars and then we did our races. the order went car one car two car three and so on.

For the first race we just let the car go down the ramp because it was the fastest one, but for the second race which was the stopping one we taped a piece of tape to the middle and slowly took it down the ramp so it would stop at the green line, and for the last race we put car down normally.

I think our car done pretty good, The stopping race we made it to the top two. We could've added something else to make it better but we done pretty well with what we did.

Aim: to see how far the vortex cannon can shoot.
Equipment: Bucket, tape, rubbish bag, cups.
Method: the teacher put a hole in the the bottom of the bucket
then we put bags on top and taped it.
next we stacked the cups and hit the rubbish bag to try knock the cups over.
Displaying 20170518_113955.jpg

result: when we tried knocking the cups over from 3 meters away it didn't fall over.
discussion: if i done this again i would've made the bag tighter.

The Physics of Car Racing

What has been done to make this a 'fair test'.
  • All the cars are racing on the same track.
  • They're racing at the same time.
  • Everyone has the same materials.
  • We all have the same time to create/work on our cars.
What forces are needed to make the car go faster and how have you modified your car accordingly?
  • Acceleration
  • Gravity
  • We taped some string to the back of the car.
  • we used tape to stick down the balloon and the string.
  • We taped the balloon on the top of the car to make it look pretty!
What forces are needed to make the car stop and what adjustments have you made to try and stop it by the line?
  • The drag/friction in the car slows it down by pulling it.
  • We added the sting to the car to lower it so it doesn't go past the line.
What forces are needed to make the car travel further and what adjustments have you made to achieve this?
  • Acceleration makes the car go faster so it won't slow down.
  • We will pull the string down the ramp to make the car go faster and further.

Cars

1.What problems does our car have already?
It doesn't slow down
It turns around and goes backwards at the end
2.How do you think you’ll make your car go faster?

3.How do you think you’ll slow your car down?
Add something that works like a break
4.What equipment will we need?
Rubber band

Friction

What will have more/less friction
Carpet
I think there will be less friction than the lino and grass but more than the concrete
Concrete
I think this will have less because it’s more rough and bumpy
Grass
I think the grass will have less friction
Lino
I think the lino will have the most friction because it’s smooth

Conclusion:
i think the best place to play tug of war is on the grass or concrete

i think the grass because its more rough than the lino and the carpet

i think the concrete because its probably the most rough and has the least friction

Characteristics of the Memoir

My memoir is about my first day at primary school.

My mum was driving me to school with my two pigtails in my hair. I was really thrilled but nervous at the same time. My mum walked me to my class and I met my teacher Mr Hay. He was an inspiring teacher. Some of my friends from kindergarten were there too. When the bell rung my mum left to go to work, I walked in and sat down at a table with Willow and another girl. The teacher introduced himself and done the roll.

At lunchtime I sat down at a bench outside my classroom and ate my lunch, after i had finished eating i would go to the playground and play tag or go on the monkeybars with my new friend Willow. I would normally go see my sister at lunch. When lunch was over me and my new friends went back into the classroom and did more work. By the end of the day I was tired and wanted to go home. My first day at school was enjoyable but tiring at the same time.

Discover the World-Kupe-Reflection

What we been learning

Explain and learn New Zealand’s cultures and national identity.

How i think my work shows my learning

because i added in all the information into my work and took my time to write and plan everything out and that i can explain all the subjects.

If i did this kete again what would i do differently?

I would take a little less time because i rushed the last one a little bit. I would also add some more information to each piece of work and maybe add some more color to my work.

Something i am wondering
what was the first country found.

New Zealand Kapa Haka

Kapa Haka is Maori's way of dancing in New Zealand. Kapa Haka generally involves the haka and poi dance.
