My Food Bag Semester 1

My Food Bag - Fried Rice
Who was your profile target? My profile target was a teenage vegetarian.
What was your recipe decision based on? I decided to pick a fairly simple recipe and one that I thought everyone would enjoy.

Ingredients
2 cups of raw rice
2 eggs
½ capsicum
2T sunflower oil
1 ½ mixed veggies

  1. Cook rice for 20 mins - Could cook rice day before then cool for best result. Cut capsicum into small cubes.
  2. In a pan or wok add 1T of oil. Add egg. Cook egg until fried.
  3. Take the egg out of the pan. Add the rest of the oil then place mixed veggies and capsicum. Let them cook for 3 minutes.
  4. Once veggies cooked add eggs and rice. Cook until rice is all fully fried

Explain why this recipe was chosen to do? I think my group decided to do this recipe because it was a simple but delicious dish.
How it fits into the nutritional model of the dinner plate? It fits because it has lots of healthy vegetables and good protein.
What changes did you make during the 2 practice practical lessons? We added curry powder.
Why did you make these changes? Because I think it tasted better with it.
What were the positives of your final product? We put out a dish that everyone enjoyed and had positive feedback about.
Describe the two things you have learnt this semester? I learnt how to properly set up my workspace before cooking and, what different foods aren't good for you that I thought were.

Reflection on 5 practical outcomes (Term 1)

5 Practical Outcomes:

Spag bol, Pasta with tomato sauce, breakfast muffins, grilled beef kofta, chicken curry.

Teamwork:
I think my team worked well together because we all know what each other are good at and what do to first. Worked better with only 4 people not 5.

Measuring:
The measuring with these recipes was easy because you can change the ratio of things if there are less or more people.

Spag bol:

What I liked: I liked that it was an easy recipe to make and could be made for the whole family.

What could be improved: Add cheese onto of the spag bol.

Final thoughts: Was a good recipe, enjoyed it.

Pasta with tomato sauce:

What I liked: I liked that all the team enjoyed making this one.

What could be improved: I would add less sauce because there was a bit too much.

Final thoughts: I enjoyed making this one.

Breakfast muffins:

What I liked: I liked that it was different and baking instead of cooking.

What could be improved: I would not change anything.

Final thoughts: Was fun and would make again.

Grilled beef kofta:

What I liked: I liked that it was different.

What could be improved: I would change the sticks because they got burnt and were too hot to hold.

Final thoughts: Not my favourite meal but was okay.

Chicken curry:

What I liked: I liked that everyone had something do to with this recipe.

What could be improved: I think the rice was overcooked and would cook it for less time next time.

Final thoughts: Again wasn't a favourite but was alright.

Final Outcome for team 1:
At the beginning, I was a bit confused but as time went by I understand everything now.

Chicken and rice patties

Chicken and rice patties

Recipe:
  • 3 cups Jasmin rice (1 cup uncooked)
  • 1 chicken breast
  • 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large carrot
  • 3 spring onion stalks
  • 1 1/3 cups grated mozzarella cheese
  • 3 eggs
Method:
  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius
  2. Slice chicken breast in half widthways, so it will cook through quicker.
  3. Heat oil in a medium frying pan and cook chicken until it begins to brown
  4. Remove from pan and shred chicken using a fork and set aside.
  5. Grate carrot so you have at least 1 cup.
  6. Finely slice spring onion.
  7. Lightly beat the eggs.
  8. In a large bowl add cooked rice, chicken, carrot, spring onion, eggs and about 3/4 of the cheese and mix well
  9. Spray muffin trays with cooking spray then spoon mixture into trays. Top with remaining cheese.
  10. Place in oven for 15 minutes or until the tops turn golden brown.
  11. Let them sit in the trays for a few minutes before removing from rack to cool. Use a knife to work around the edges of the rice patties to remove easier.
In our first practical we made chicken and rice patties.
We made sure to use mise en place (Preparing everything and get set up) before we started anything.
Making the patties was pretty easy and was fun for our first time cooking. I think my group worked well together because we all got along and helped each other.

Putting everything in its place, preparing everything and getting everything ready.

Safety around fire in a room
Name the 2 fire safety equipment we have in a room: Fire blanket and a fire extinguisher.

Explain how each is used: Place the fire blanket over the blanket.

Why don’t you blow out a fire? When blowing out a fire it can cause it to get hotter and burn faster.

What are the three things you should try to do when putting out a fire?

Place a wet cloth or towel over the fire, Throw baking soda or salt on it, Use a fire extinguisher or fire blanket.
