Why Was a Treaty Needed in New Zealand?

In 1830 there were 100,000 Māori 200 and Europeans living in New Zealand. The behaviour of the Whalers, the Missionaries’ desire to help protect Māori rights and the Musket Wars were reasons that a treaty was needed. The Declaration of Independence was another contributing factor to the need for a treaty.

One reason that a treaty was needed was the lawless behaviour of some of the British Settlers like whalers. When whalers came back after months and months at sea, they would get very drunk which caused many fights and arguments. There was also a lot of prostitution which lead to many diseases. This is important because without the treaty fighting would increase and more people would have died. Without it, things would have gotten way out of hand.

Another reason that a treaty was needed was to protect Māori rights. One group that felt strongly about this was the missionaries. They were worried about the number of Māori being killed or enslaved because of musket wars, the Pakeha sailors violent behaviour, the spread of diseases and the large land sales. The missionaries taught the Māori a lot of things. Including, teaching them farming and methods, taught them how to read and write in Māori, and about their religion. The numbers of Māori living in New Zealand dropped from 100k in 1836 to less than 30k in 1901. While European numbers skyrocketed. Only one hundred Europeans were living in New Zealand in 1836 but by 1901 there were almost 1 million Europeans in New Zealand. In 1901 there were only 25k Māori living in New Zealand, but now there are around 600k. If there was a treaty around this time, the Māori population wouldn’t have dropped so low.

Another reason that a treaty was needed was the Musket Wars. From the years 1807-1842, the musket wars were occurring. Tribes were able to get muskets by trading various things for a musket in return. The first tribe to get a musket was Nga Puhi. Over 20,000 people died during this time period. Population and power changed, all the tribes had muskets and had turned them into killing machines. With a treaty, these wars would not have happened.

The final reason that a treaty was needed was the existence of the Declaration of Independence. Interestingly, the treaty was signed for trading and legal purposes. It was created to protect the rights of Māori and give Māori power of New Zealand. It was signed on the 28th of October 1835 and was signed by 52 chiefs. The Declaration of Independence meant that Māori could only trade with the British. The Declaration of Independence only helped the Māori, not everyone living in New Zealand. This country would not be the same without it.

This essay has demonstrated that without the treaty the behaviour from Europeans would have gotten out of hand. Without a treaty, Māori numbers would have dropped even lower, Māori wouldn’t have power over New Zealand and musket wars could have still continued today. If so, the number of Māori living in New Zealand would become extremely low. I think that the treaty helped to save this country and that it wouldn’t be the same without it.

The Treaty of Union (England & Scotland)

Why do we still talk about the Treaty of Waitangi?
Because it is a significant thing that happened in New Zealand and the country wouldn't be the same today if none of that had happened.

Should we still celebrate Waitangi day?
I think we should still celebrate it because it was a big thing that happened in New Zealand and we can't just forget it. Without what happened New Zealand would not be the same today.

Maori and European Population Changes in NZ 1838-1901

What does the graph show us?
Maori and European population changes in NZ 1838-1901.

Why do you think the numbers of Maori change?
Maori would fight for the land and they would get many diseases which caused people to die. Women couldn't repopulate because of said diseases.

Why do you think the numbers of Europeans changed?
More Europeans arrived in NZ which means they had more power and land so more Europeans wanted to come to NZ.

Discussion + Poster

Discuss the idea of Mythology/stories in religion, and the role myths and stories play in society.
They tell a story, so others can learn about it, so others can understand other peoples religion, can inspire, brings people together.

What similarities are there between the myths and stories of Maori and the first British Missionaries? They both have gods and are connected by ancestors.

Why would differences between Maori beliefs and English beliefs cause conflict? Because they were of different culture and because they believe in different things.

Social Studies Roman and Egyptian Exhibition

Roman and Egyptian Exhibition

Who was in my group and what did we make?
Alayna and I were in a group together and we did Roman numerals. We made a poster with information on it about numerals and we made bracelets with different numerals on them.

Something interesting I learnt?
The most interesting thing I learnt was how mummies were made and why it took so long.

Working in a group
I liked working in a group because it was less stressful with having to get things done and it took less time.

Mr Sutton opening the exhibition
Mr Sutton opened the exhibition by cutting a ribbon. The ribbon was tied in front of the door and when we were able to go in the cut it.

Here is a link to a video Mr Wilson made of all the things we did.

Pyramids

Today in Social Studies we learnt about pyramids so we built pyramids out of lego.

Pyramids were used for burial places and monuments. They also put treasure inside of them so to keep out robbers they would put traps inside. There are over 138 pyramids and the tallest is 480 feet tall, called The Great Pyramid of Giza or Khufu. They were made step like but gradually got flatter. The base of the pyramid was always made a square. They would build pyramids on the west side of the River Nile because the Northside was the land of the dead.

Ancient Egyptian Inventions

Ancient Egyptian Inventions

Ancient Egyptians used pictures to write, called hieroglyphics. Egyptians were the first people to develop their language into writing. It developed around 3150 BCE. Although it is just pictures, it is still the earliest form of writing. It could be written in any direction, left to right, right to left, top to bottom. It was very complicated because there are over 1000s of symbols. Because of this, it took years and years of education and practice to learn it, so only certain people would learn it. They were called scribes. They would start learning at a young age of six or seven. Only children of the wealthy got the opportunity to train as scribes. Normally, they would write on walls or tablets but they also invented a type of paper called papyrus. This was made from a tall reed-like plant called papyrus. It was made by using strips of the inner stem. They would place them horizontally and vertically in a square, then they would place linen cloth over the paper and apply pressure with a mallet or stones. The papyrus plant was also used for many other things. It was used to make boxes, baskets and mats, toys such as dolls, rope, and even small fishing boats. It could also be baked and eaten.

Stone Age Art

In social studies, we are learning about the stone age, so we decided to paint stone age art onto the classroom walls. Cavemen made this art to tell a story and it represented them in a way that tells how it was in the stone age and how they lived. The tools used in the pictures were used for hunting and killing animals for food.

My artwork
In my artwork, I made a man hunting a pig with a spare.

10Bu Most Used Device and Cell Phone Evolution

Hours / Most Used Devices 10Bu
In social studies, we are learning about the history of cell phones so our teacher decided that we should time how much we use our phone over the weekend and these are the results. There were 23 people in total. The highest time was 43 hours and the lowest was 5 hours. The most used device was the phone and the least was the iPad/Tablet. The first graph shows the number of time people used their device and the second is which device was used the most.

We also made a timeline of the evolution of cell phones. From 1973 to 2017.

Social Studies Story: THE LIFE OF HUDSON CRAWFORD

STORY: THE LIFE OF HUDSON CRAWFORD

It all started in May 15th 1857, when Mother and Father decided it was time to flee the country and move to New Zealand. They said we were moving to New Zealand because London was too overcrowded and unsanitary and that New Zealand would give me more opportunity for work. Mother also said that Minnie and I could get married over there. Mother and Fathers bags were all packed and ready to go. We were leaving in two days and I’m far from ready. What if something goes wrong? Or if it isn’t like people say it is? Or if it's exactly like London? “Hudson” Mother yelled from downstairs, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Pack your things, we are leaving tomorrow instead of Friday” My father called out. I grabbed my bags and started packing my stuff. The next morning I woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs. I could hear my fiance, Minnie, and my father talking downstairs. Truth is, I don’t love Minnie, I never have and I don’t think I ever will. Mother and father have wanted Minnie and me to get married since forever. We have been together since we were both fifteen, and mother and father convinced me to propose two years ago when we were eighteen.

“I am so excited to leave, we can finally get married in New Zealand and start a family,” Minnie says, grabbing my arm as we walk down to the ship. “Yeah” I replied, uneasily. Mother and father bought us cabin tickets, which means we get a proper bed and better food than others. All our bags are already on the ship and we are about to leave. Just as I was stepping onto the boat, I saw the most beautiful girl in the UK, so beautiful she makes me stop in my tracks. “Honey, what’s wrong” Minnie asks, noticing that I had stopped. “Nothing, nothing” I finally say after a few more seconds of staring, turning back around to look at her one last time before stepping onto the ship and finding mine and Minnie's cabin. I’ve got to get her name and I’ve got to get it fast. It’s been three nights on the ship and I haven’t seen the mysterious girl again. I’ve been thinking about checking the steerage for her but I don’t think someone so gorgeous should be somewhere so unsanitary and cramped. It’s around 6:30 pm and everyone was having dinner. We were having pork and potatoes. After dinner, I snuck out to try and find the infamous mystery girl. I ended up finding her by the end of the ship with a notepad drawing something. “What are you drawing,” I say, accidentally scaring her go her feet. “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you” I apologize. “No, no It’s okay, I should have expected someone to find me” She replies with a laugh. “I’m Hudson Crawford, nice to meet you…” I pause waiting for her name, extending my hand for her to shake. “Georgia Harlon, nice to meet you, Hudson”. Georgia I repeat in my head. A beautiful name for a beautiful girl. “So you’re into art?” I ask, looking down at the notebook in her hand. “Um, yeah I guess so, nothing professional though” responds. “Can I have a look? My father used to paint in his younger days” I requested. “Yeah sure, probably nothing compared to your fathers though” She replies shyly, with a small laugh. I start flipping through the pages, looking at all the small details of each art piece. There were drawings of trees and flowers to portraits and landscape. “This is insane, talk about professional” I let out a small laugh while continuing to flip through the pages. “Stop it, it’s really nothing” Georgia replies, grabbing the book out of my hands before I could look at any more. “No I’m serious, you could really do something with those,” I say, turning to face her more and look into her eyes. It’s been almost 60 days on the ship and Georgia and I have been sneaking around for almost every day. After a week of knowing her, I knew that I was in love with her. As soon as we arrive in New Zealand I’m going to tell Minnie that I don’t love her and that I wanna be with Georgia instead. Right now, Minnie and I are talking about our future in New Zealand. She said she wants to become an artist when we arrive there. I know for a fact that her art is nowhere as good as Georgia’s. “Are you listening to me?” Minnie interrupts my thoughts. “Yeah, yeah you’re gonna get into art when we arrive in New Zealand” I reply impatiently, waiting for her to leave. The next morning I wake up alone in my cabin. I walk outside and see that there is a concert happening. I look around to find Minnie or my parents but my eye catches Georgia dancing, singing and laughing along to the music with an older man. I smile and walk over to her, taking her from the older man and dancing with her. “Nice to see you again, Georgia” I smile at her “Nice to see you too, Hudson” She smiles back. “Who the hell is she” I hear someone screech behind me. I turn around to see Minnie standing there with my mother and father. I pull away from Georgia and run after Minnie. I might not love her, but I still care about her. “Minnie, I swear she’s no one, we were only dancing” It’s not like I’m in love with her I think but of course don’t say. Minnie slams the door in my face and doesn’t talk to me for the next couple days. A few days after Minnie slammed a door in my face, I found out Georgia got sick from being in the steerage part of the ship. A week after she got sick, she ended up passing only a few weeks away from New Zealand.

As soon as we landed in New Zealand, my mother and father are ready to buy a house and get our new lives started. They also said they me and Minnie need to get married as soon as possible, but they don’t know that I fell in love with Georgia. Right now is mine and Minnie wedding, but all I can think about is Georgia. “You may now kiss the bride” I hear as soon as Minnie leans in to kiss me. Next, I hear everyone clapping and then I’m pulled from the wedding and into a car. Minnie and I had three kids together, Olivia, Noah, and one coming in a few months that we are going to name George.
10 YEARS LATER.
“Minnie, where’s my jacket?” I asked my wife, as I am rummaging through our closet. Minnie and I ended up staying together despite me cheating on her with Georgia. Just before she died, she told me that she wanted me to keep her art and to do something with it. A few years ago I made her art public and now she’s the most well-known artist in New Zealand.

Social Studies Child Trafficking Project

Child Trafficking

We made a project about child trafficking. We got to pick between three subject, child trafficking, child soldiers, and child slaves. My group decided to pick child trafficking because we didn't really know what it was and we wanted to learn more about it. Child trafficking is when someone kidnaps a younger person (mostly female) and uses them for work or sexual purposes.

Something I learnt while doing this project is what trafficking really is and how many people are stuck in human trafficking. There are about 15,000 people still in human trafficking today.

The most useful resource that we used was ZOE international. It was our most useful resource because they have all the information on what trafficking is and they try to help people out of it which I think is really cool.

We used Clipchamp Create to make this video.

Human Rights

Human Rights
In social studies, we are learning about human rights. We had to make a poster with all human rights. We also had to rank what we thought were the top 10 most important human rights.

What are you learning so far?
We are learning about human rights and the importance of them.

What is the most interesting thing you have learned?
The most interesting thing I have learnt is how long it look for the whole world to accept all the different human rights and not want their own.

Explain what your work is and how it links to the topic?
My work is about all the different human rights we have and what I think are the top 10 most important rights. This links to the topic because it shows that I have been learning about human rights.
