Separation

Aim:
To separate a solution from a precipitate (a precipitate is a sold that forms a liquid)

Equipment:

  • Lead Nitrate
  • Potassium Iodide
  • Conical flask
  • Stirring rod
  • 250mL beaker
  • Funnel
  • Filter paper

Method:
  1. Put safety glasses on.
  2. Pour 10mL of Potassium Iodide and 10mL of Lead Nitrate into a 250mL beaker.
  3. Fold the filter paper in half two times and open it on one of the sides and make it into a cone shape.
  4. Place the filter paper inside of the funnel.
  5. Then pour the liquid in.
Results:
The liquids turned yellow, then it started to separate when we poured it onto the filter paper in the funnel.

Discussion:
When I mixed the two solutions together it turned into a pigmented yellow colour.
When we poured it into the funnel it filters through the filter paper and left a yellow residue.
