To separate a solution from a precipitate (a precipitate is a sold that forms a liquid)
Equipment:
- Lead Nitrate
- Potassium Iodide
- Conical flask
- Stirring rod
- 250mL beaker
- Funnel
- Filter paper
Method:
- Put safety glasses on.
- Pour 10mL of Potassium Iodide and 10mL of Lead Nitrate into a 250mL beaker.
- Fold the filter paper in half two times and open it on one of the sides and make it into a cone shape.
- Place the filter paper inside of the funnel.
- Then pour the liquid in.
Results:
The liquids turned yellow, then it started to separate when we poured it onto the filter paper in the funnel.
Discussion:
When I mixed the two solutions together it turned into a pigmented yellow colour.
When we poured it into the funnel it filters through the filter paper and left a yellow residue.
