Corrosion Experiment

Aim: Observing the effects of corrosion.

Corrosion is when metals are exposed to the environment they can deteriorate, or break down.

We put 5 nails in different test tubes with different stuff in them. There was a nail painted + nail polish, in water, oil, saltwater, calcium chloride + water, and magnesium + water. After 3 days we will find out which nail corroded the most.

Hypothesis: I think the magnesium + water or calcium chloride + water will rust the most and oil will rust the least.

Observations:
  • Nail polish: Rusted at the top and the nail polish came off.
  • Oil: Didn't rust at all.
  • Saltwater: Rusted the most.
  • Calcium chloride + water: Hardly rusted.
  • Magnesium + water: Rusted a little bit.
Saltwater rusted the most, oil rusted the least.

Left to right:
Nail polish, oil, saltwater, calcium chloride + water, magnesium + water.

  1. Hi Chloe, Great work :) so good to see pictures before and after. Why do you think that oil stopped corrosion the most? Next time, it would be great to see you explain why you thought your hypothesis, and an explanation on what actually happened and why.
