Investigating State Changes

Aim: 
To observe water as it changed state from solid to liquid and then to a gas.

Equipment: 


  • 250mL beaker
  • Thermometer
  • Bunsen burner
  • Heatproof mat
  • Tripod
  • Gauze mat
  • Stopwatch
  • Retort stand and clamp
  • Ice cubes

Method: 


  1. Put your ice in your beaker and place your thermometer and set up your equipment.
  2. Attach your retort stand and clamp to your thermometer (make sure your thermometer is touching the water but not at the bottom of the beaker)
  3. Record the temperature of the ice every minute for at least three times.
  4. Light the bunsen burner and start timing with your stopwatch  
  5. Measure and record the temperature every time. 
  6. Continue recording until the water has started to boil. 

Results: 
0 minutes: 0°c
1 minute: 40°c
2 minutes: 58°c
3 minutes: 93°c
