Social Studies Roman and Egyptian Exhibition

Roman and Egyptian Exhibition

Who was in my group and what did we make?
Alayna and I were in a group together and we did Roman numerals. We made a poster with information on it about numerals and we made bracelets with different numerals on them.

Something interesting I learnt?
The most interesting thing I learnt was how mummies were made and why it took so long.

Working in a group
I liked working in a group because it was less stressful with having to get things done and it took less time.

Mr Sutton opening the exhibition
Mr Sutton opened the exhibition by cutting a ribbon. The ribbon was tied in front of the door and when we were able to go in the cut it.

Here is a link to a video Mr Wilson made of all the things we did.

Levers Investigation

In science, we have been learning about different forces and what they act upon. We did an experiment to figure out of levers work.

Aim: To investigate the advantage of using a lever to lift a load.

Equipment:

  • 30 cm ruler
  • a pencil
  • 2 plastic cups
  • 20 marbles
  • Blue tack
Method:
  1. Tape two cups to either end of the ruler centred on the 2 cm and 28 cm mark.
  2. Place the pencil under the ruler at the 15 cm mark. The pencil will act as a pivot point.
  3. Add 10 marbles to the cup at the zero (0) end of the ruler.
  4. Add marbles one by one to the other cup (at the 30 cm end) until the cups are balanced.
  5. Record how many marbles needed.
  6. Move the pencil to the 13 cm mark and repeat steps 4 and 5.
  7. Move the pencil to the 10 cm mark and repeat steps 4 and 5.
Hypothesis: I think that you will need the same amount of marbles for the first try, but for the second and third you will need more or less because the pencil isn't in the middle of the ruler.

Results:

Experiment 1: Side length: 1:1, marbles in cup 1: 10, marbles in cup 2.
Experiment 2: Side length: 1:2, marbles in cup 1: 7, marbles in cup 2.
Experiment 3: Side length: 1:3, marbles in cup 1: 4, marbles in cup 2.

Textiles Term 3

In Textiles term 3, we have been practising different techniques. By term 4 we are going to have our own piece of fabric that we are going to turn into something. So far we have learnt colours, how to make and use stencils, block-printing, and screen printing. My favourite so far has been screen printing.
For block printing, we got a small piece of lino and cut out a design, dipped the lino in paint and put it onto the fabric.
Block print:
Stencil printing we got stencils and a sponge and printed the stencils onto the fabric.
Stencil print

For screenprint, we cut out an image with a craft knife and used a roller thing to make the stencil.

Pyramids

Today in Social Studies we learnt about pyramids so we built pyramids out of lego.

Pyramids were used for burial places and monuments. They also put treasure inside of them so to keep out robbers they would put traps inside. There are over 138 pyramids and the tallest is 480 feet tall, called The Great Pyramid of Giza or Khufu. They were made step like but gradually got flatter. The base of the pyramid was always made a square. They would build pyramids on the west side of the River Nile because the Northside was the land of the dead.
